More Information

Palisade, or Picket fence as it is sometimes called, is very popular as front or back garden boundary fencing, particularly where a solid fence is not needed or desired. Picket fencing can also be used to partition off parts of the garden, such as the veggie patch from children & pets. Matching gates and fittings are available.

All our Palisade fencing materials are pressure treated with preservative for longevity. To produce the traditional cottage style fence, once the timber has dried, it can be stained or painted. Paint should be water-based, microporous and of external quality.  Dark colours should be avoided as they attract heat which may cause additional movement in the timber.

For Palisades lower than 900mm high, round top or flat top Palisades are safer.

Palisade (Picket) can be supplied in kit form in 4 standard bay sizes (centre of post to centre of post), ranging from 1.8m (6’) to 3m (10’). We do not recommend exceeding 3m bays, although 3.6 m rails are available for use in unusual circumstances and where there is no other choice.

Generally, 1.2m high Palisades and below require 2 rails. 1.35m to 1.8m high Palisades need 3 rails.

Rails between the posts can either be triangular shaped Arris rails or sawn square rails.  These fit into mortices cut into the posts at preset dimensions for the height of the fence required. This method can be used on flat or sloping ground.

For flat ground and easy assembly, square rails can also be screwed onto the face of the posts. The Palisades are attached to the rails so that they run continuously for the complete length of the fence, including in front of the posts.

Gravel boards can be fitted at the bottom of the fence and are available in lengths to match the rails. This raises the Palisades up away from the ground and can also have other benefits such stopping balls etc rolling through the gaps between the Palisades.

Palisade spacing is normally “hit & miss” using a palisade as a spacer.  The spacing can be adjusted to suit individual requirements.

  • To work out the number of Palisades required, multiply the length of the fence line in feet by 2 OR length in metres by 6.5.
  • For 13mm (1/2″)  spacing multiply the number of feet in the fence line by 3.5 OR the length in metres by 11.5
  • For 38mm (1 1/2″)  spacing multiply the number of feet in the fence line by 2.66 OR the length in metres by 8.7
  • For 50mm (2″)  spacing multiply the number of feet in the fence line by 2.4 OR the length in metres by 7.9

For small children we would advise using round tops and a closer spacing which will help to prevent little people from climbing on the fence.

Capping rail (for flat top Palisades only) and Routered posts can be included if desired.

*Ex is the size before the timber is planed, approx. 5mm is shaved off each face.
