A pergola can give an unused patio, lawn edge or seating area the feeling of an outdoor room. Building a garden pergola starts with a good plan. Before cutting the first length of timber, consider the position, post depth and timber required, as well as the finished look you envisage.
This is a manageable project for a confident DIYer, provided the structure is planned carefully and built from suitable treated timber. Larger, freestanding designs or pergolas fixed to a house may be better suited to a professional installer, particularly where drainage, services or structural fixings are involved.
Plan your garden pergola before buying materials
Start by deciding what the pergola needs to do. A small structure over a bench might only need two posts and a wall fixing, while a freestanding pergola over a dining set needs enough headroom, a clear footprint and posts that will not interfere with paving or garden access.
For most gardens, allow at least 2.1 metres of clear headroom beneath the lowest cross member. There are no set sizes for pergolas; the right dimensions depend on the space you have available and what you want to be beneath it, maybe a table and chairs.
Think about sun, shade and sightlines too. Open rafters create filtered shade rather than full shelter. If you want reliable rain protection, a pergola alone is not the answer: you will need a suitable roof system with falls and drainage, which is a whole different ball game and best left to a professional. Climbing plants can soften the structure over time, but they add weight and retain moisture, so the frame and fixings need to be chosen accordingly.
Before digging any holes, check for underground cables, pipes and drains. Also consider whether the work affects boundaries, neighbouring properties or a listed building. Many domestic garden pergolas do not need planning permission, but rules can vary with height, location and property type. Choose timber and fixings that suit the job
The framework must be strong enough for wind loading, seasonal movement and anything you intend to grow over it. Pressure-treated softwood is a practical, good-value choice for most garden pergolas. It should be properly treated for ground contact where posts are buried, rather than simply coated with preservative.
For a typical 3m by 3m freestanding pergola, 125mm by 125mm posts are a sensible starting point, big enough to be notched for the beams without looking too chunky. The beams and rafters should be sized to span their intended distance without looking slight or flexing. Don't be tempted to choose small beams as they will start to sag within a few months. The beams should be at least 150mm deep and about 50mm wide, and the top rails 100mm deep and 38 to 50mm wide. Heavier sections give a more substantial finish and are particularly worthwhile on exposed sites.
Avoid using ordinary interior screws or light-duty brackets. They may look adequate on installation day but will corrode or work loose outdoors. Galvanised fixings are generally suitable for treated timber, while stainless steel is a strong choice where appearance and corrosion resistance are priorities.
Set out the footprint accurately
A pergola is only as neat as its setting out. Mark the four post positions with pegs and run string lines between them. Measure both diagonals of the rectangle. When the diagonal measurements match, the corners are square.
Take time over this stage. Even a small error can leave beams misaligned and make rafters difficult to space evenly. If the pergola sits beside a patio, you can use the paving lines as a visual guide, but still confirm the frame itself is square.
Check levels across the site with a long straightedge and spirit level. A slight slope is common in gardens and need not prevent a successful build, but decide where the finished beam line should sit before setting the posts. Do not assume every post can be set to the same length above ground if the level changes.
Dig and concrete the posts
As a general rule, bury around one quarter of the post length. For a pergola with roughly 2.1m of finished clearance, this often means using 3m posts and setting them around 750mm into the ground. Exposed gardens and taller frames may need deeper foundations or professional advice.
Dig each hole wider than the post, typically around 300mm square, with a firm base. Add a layer of gravel to aid drainage, then place the first post in position. Brace it in two directions using temporary timber, checking it for plumb with a spirit level.
Mix and place the concrete according to the product instructions, keeping the top of the footing slightly above ground level and bevel the top of the concrete so that water cannot pool around the post. Recheck the post for plumb before the concrete begins to set. Repeat for the remaining posts, using a string line and measured reference height to keep them aligned.
Do not rush into fitting beams while the concrete is still setting. Follow the curing time stated on the mix, remembering that quick-setting products can be affected by temperature. The structure will benefit from allowing the foundations to gain strength before the top structure is fitted.
An alternative for patios and hard standings
Where a pergola is installed on an existing concrete slab, bolt-down post supports can be used to avoid digging. The base must be thick and stable enough for the loads involved, and the brackets must be fixed with appropriate anchors. Do not fix a pergola to loose slabs, thin concrete or a patio with uncertain foundations.
Fit the main beams securely
The main beams can sit on top of the posts, be notched into them, or be fixed to their sides. A double-beam arrangement, with one beam on each side of the posts and coach bolts passing through, is a traditional and strong method. It also creates a clear seat for top rails above.
Use bolts with washers or structural timber screws for primary structural connections. Drill clean, straight holes and tighten the fixings firmly without crushing the timber fibres. Check the frame for square again before permanently securing every joint.
If you are building a wall-mounted pergola, the ledger board needs fixing to sound masonry with suitable structural anchors. It must not be attached to cladding, guttering, weak render or a garden wall that is not designed to take the load. This is one area where getting advice from an experienced installer is highly recommended and can prevent costly damage.
Add top rails with decorative ends
Set the top rails across the beams at consistent centres; the spacing is up to you, but remember each top rail adds extra weight that the beams have to carry. Wider spacing gives a lighter look; closer spacing provides more shade and a stronger visual rhythm. Mark the beam before fitting the first rafter so the spacing stays even from one end to the other.
Birdsmouth cuts or shallow notches can help top rails sit neatly on top of beams, although galvanised rafter brackets are a straightforward alternative. Keep cuts the rails shallow. Removing too much timber weakens the member at precisely the point where it carries weight. Do not notch the beams.
Protect the timber and plan for maintenance
Quality pressure-treated timber needs time to dry before most decorative finishes are applied. If you want to stain or paint it, use a product suitable for exterior treated timber and follow the manufacturer’s drying guidance. If you want to retain the natural wood colour, then use a clear or tinted UV deckin wood oil. Applying a finish to wet timber can trap moisture and lead to poor adhesion.
Inspect the pergola each spring. Tighten any loose bolts, remove leaves where they collect around joints, and keep soil and mulch away from the base of timber posts. Prune climbing plants so they do not force open joints or bury fixings. A well-built frame does not need constant attention, but small checks will extend its working life.
