We know ordering a gate can be daunting. So many different styles and fittings are available, but the first step is getting the measurements right! Here’s our crash course on measuring for a new gate.
Measuring the Width.
If you’ve got existing posts and just need a new gate, measure the gap between the posts. Measure at the top, middle and bottom. The posts are unlikely to be as straight as they look, and it is not uncommon to have a 5 to 10mm difference between the smallest and largest measurement. If the measurements do fluctuate, give our team the smallest, and they will work out the gate size for you. Any gap caused by the post not being straight is normally hidden by the gate stops and not seen.
If you also need posts, measure the whole gap, and our team can do the maths and advise you on the correct post size to use and your gate width. The final gate size will be smaller than your measurement because of the allowance for the posts, gate fittings and expansion clearance. If you’ve got a pair of gates, then don’t worry - just measure the same way, and our team will sort it out.
Measuring the Height.
Gates usually need 2cm to 5cm of clearance underneath to open freely. Measure from the ground to the desired height of the top of the gate and take off the clearance you want & this is your gate height. Please remember:
- When ordering round-topped gates, you must specify whether the height you give includes the curve or is plus the curve. Depending on the gate style, we can advise you of the curve height.
- If your gate will open on uneven ground or is blocked by obstacles, please let us know so we can advise you on the best way to work around it.
Tip: You’ll be asked if the gate is Right or Left-hand hanging when you call to order a gate. This simply means: when looking at the face (the good side, usually the outside), which side are the hinges on? This matters because gates have a diagonal brace that runs up from the hanging stile to stop the gate from dropping.
