More Information
Cleft Chestnut Post and Rail, sometimes called Sussex Rail, is made from untreated Chestnut hardwood. The wood is cut during the winter when there is less sap in the wood, which increases the durability of the wood.
A Cleft Chestnut post is supplied untreated, but you can apply additional treatment to the bottom section before being put into the ground if required.
A Sawn treated softwood plate mortised for 2 or 3 rails is used to attach cleft rail fencing to square gate posts or walls.
Due to the traditional nature of these, they are made to imperial measurements.
Cleft intermediate and corner posts are basically half a tree trunk with 2 or 3 pairs of mortises cut in for fitting the rails.
