Long-throw gate locks (sometimes called Rimlocks) are made specifically for external gate security and can be fitted to most styles of gates. The longer bolt allows for the natural gate movement during the year. Unfortunately, standard locks do not have a long enough bolt to ensure that your gate remains securely closed during long, hot summers when gates shrink.

  • Key lockable, with a long stainless steel square bolt.
  • These long-throw gate locks will fit either standard 50mm (2") gate frames or 70mm (3") heavy gate frames.
  • There is a choice of keyed operation on both sides of the gate or an external key and internal knob.

Installation Tips

Make sure that holes drilled through the gate are square to the gate. If the lock is fitted into a hole that is not at 90 degrees to the gate frame, it can put pressure on the lock mechanism as the gate moves and cause the lock to seize up.

During the winter, cover both sides of the lock to keep moisture out. I have found the easiest way is to fix two clear plastic bags, one larger than the other (the stiffer, the better), over the lock on both sides. Put a few coppers in each bag to act as ballast; turn the tops of the bags over to seal and hold them in place with drawing pins. This method is simple and not too unsightly, but it is very effective and can save a lot of drama with frozen gate locks.
