Counter Rail

Counter rail is pressure-treated and used in fencing or as framing timber for building sheds or external framework.

The Counter rail supports capping rails or trellis panels that can be fitted over closeboard or Palisade fencing. It is also very popular for use in other DIY projects, such as shed building.

For fencing, a 50mm rail is nailed onto the post at each end and through every second or third feather-edge board. The 75mm rail ends fit into an extra mortise near the top of each post and are also nailed through the top of the feather-edge.

How to Use

There are two sizes of counter rail used for closeboard fencing: 50mm and 75mm.

  • 50mm(2") x 32mm (1.25") is attached by skew nailing to the post with a 75mm nail and then with 50mm nails through every 3rd or 4th Feather Edge Board.
  • 75mm(3") x 32mm (1.25") is located into an extra mortise in the post and then fixed with 50mm nails through every 3rd or 4th Feather Edge Board. The additional mortise for this size counter rail will be added to your posts when your order is processed.
